Karate
Karate stresses the development of spirit, mind and body through
discipline, practice and hard work. Instructor Sensei Park has been
an instructor with the YMCA Karate program since 1979 and teaching
at the YMCA since 1983. Sensei Park teaches Isshinryu karate,
which is an Okinawan style that uses a balanced approach with half
hand and half foot techniques. Isshinryu is practiced through
chart-exercises, drills, katas (forms), self-defense techniques, and
kumite (controlled fighting with pads). Sensei Park teaches these
classes from a distinctly Christian aspect and these classes are
void of any Middle-eastern religious philosophy.
Karate can be used to increase self-discipline and self-confidence
through self-control and a positive attitude. Participants are tested
periodically for promotion to different belt levels.
The Licking County Family YMCA offers Mighty Mights Karate for
children 7-12 years old as well as Adult Karate classes for anyone
